Soft Landing Project
Soft Landing Project
When the California fires swept through Los Angeles, we watched with white-knuckle nerves as evacuation orders inched closer and closer to our neighborhood. We were lucky - so many of our friends and clients were not. That kind of loss is staggering, and it left us with an unshakable resolve: if there was anything we could do to help rebuild and restore, we were all in.
Standing still was never an option. Within days, our Pasadena studio - just five miles from fire-ravaged Altadena - transformed into a donation hub. What began with a few boxes of essentials quickly became a rallying point for the community. The outpouring was immense, but we knew we could go further...
One conversation with Adam Hunter and LA CAN DO turned into a collaboration, and before long, The Soft Landing Project was born - a collective effort to provide new and gently loved furnishings to families starting over. With support from designers across the country (Arizona's Jaimee Rose among them) and generous contributions from brands like Christopher Farr and Woven, we amassed thousands of pieces stored in a downtown Los Angeles warehouse. From there, we hosted "shop days," inviting evacuees to choose furniture that made their new houses feel like home.
The response was nothing short of overwhelming. After a single post on social media, brands came flooding in with donations. Four distribution days later, we'd supported over 300 families with more than 7,000 items- and countless hours from volunteers who gave their time, their muscles, and their hearts.
The moments that stayed with us weren't measured in numbers, though. They were in the hugs, the tears, and the quiet gratitude of a parent finding clothes for their child, or a family leaving with a sofa they couldn't wait to curl up on. Strangers became friends. Grief met grace. And through it all, we were lucky enough to meet the most extraordinary humans - volunteers and families alike.
