Dear Honey, how do you make a house feel lived-in without looking messy?

ear Honey, how do you make a house feel lived-in without looking messy?
Stop decorating for approval. That sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people decorate for an imaginary audience. The internet. Future buyers. A judgmental friend with very strong opinions about marble... A home that feels personal doesn't begin with a mood board. It begins with self-discovery. The most memorable rooms always have a point of view. They aren't trying to please everyone, which is fortunate because pleasing everyone is generally the fastest route to being forgotten.
We meet a lot of people who claim they want a timeless interior... when what they really mean is they don't want to make a mistake. Understandable. But the rooms that stay with you are rarely the cautious ones. They're the ones brave enough to have an opinion. The chartreuse sofa. The collection of ceramic frogs. The wallpaper your husband hates but your soul requires. That's where things start getting interesting...
People often stop just short of the thing that would make a room extraordinary. They buy the colorful chair, but skip the wallpaper. They collect art... but paint every wall white. At House of Honey, we're less interested in designing around trends and more interested in designing around people. The question isn't "What's in style?" The question is "Who are you?" What do you collect? What do you read? What do you refuse to throw away? What object would you rescue first if the house were on fire? What have you loved for twenty years, regardless of whether anyone else understood it? These answers tell us far more than any mood board ever could.
That's why no two House of Honey projects look alike. One client wants English countryside drama. Another wants California restraint. One wants a dining room that feels like a dinner party that got delightfully out of hand. Another wants a library that encourages disappearing for an entire afternoon. Neither is right. Both are personal. However, personality still needs editing... Let a few things be the stars. Give the eye somewhere to rest. Not every object deserves a monologue. The goal isn't to create a home that looks like everyone else's idea of good taste... The goal is to create a home that couldn't possibly belong to anyone else. If a guest walks into your home and immediately knows who lives there, you've done something right.
At House of Honey, we're less interested in designing around trends and more interested in designing around people.
